Time to Register - Mississippi College Dyslexia Education and Evaluation Center with ALTA, MS Chapter Fall Dyslexia Conference - September 28 and 29, 2023

The Mississippi College Dyslexia Education and Evaluation Center will be conducting their fourth joint two-day dyslexia conference with the MS Chapter of ALTA (Academic Language Therapy Association), “Dream, Wish, Create…Believe You Can!”, on September 28 and 29, 2023. 

It is now time to register!

As in years past, the conference will be held in Anderson Hall of the BC Rogers Building on the Mississippi College campus. Registration will begin at 7:15 am with the program to begin at 8 am each day. The conference is open to all interested individuals:  academic language therapists, educators, administrators, college students, and parents to come learn about best practices when working with students who have language learning differences and other learning disabilities.

On Thursday, the Mississippi College Dyslexia Education and Evaluation Center welcomes, back by popular demand, Dr. Vennecia Jackson, M.D.  Dr. Jackson is director of diagnostic services in the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children where she has practiced with a team of experts as a developmental pediatrician since 1994.  She will speak on the topic of Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome:  Unidentified and Misunderstood Yet with Significant Implications for Learning.  Dr. Jackson explains, “This is not a new condition but one whose time has come for those who have committed to understanding and changing the lives of children who learn differently.”

Additional sessions on Thursday will include Ms. Tori Williams, Building Your Future One Brick At A Time; Mrs. Kari Grillis East presenting The 411 on Dyslexia and Numbers – Basics of Dyscalculia; Mrs. Taffie Causey, Mrs. Kathy Henley, and Mrs. Teresa Mosley with The “How Much Do You Know” Show, an interactive learning experience; Mr. Jeff Foster discussing Building Handwriting Skills; a Dyslexia Simulation; Mrs. Kay Peterson and Mrs. Kristen Frierson (in breakout sessions for MC Dyslexia Therapy program graduates and students) on Transition/Maintenance Plans; and other sessions.

On Friday, the MS Chapter of ALTA welcomes as keynote speaker, Dr. Harvey Silver providing a two-part presentation on Reading for Meaning:  How to Build Students’ Comprehension, Reasoning, and Problem-Solving Skills.  Dr. Silver is president of Silver Strong and Associates and Thoughtful Education Press.  He is an experienced educator, presenter, and coach and has conducted thousands of workshops for schools, districts, and state education organizations throughout the United States.  With the late Richard Strong, Dr. Silver developed “The Thoughtful Classroom”—a renowned professional development initiative dedicated to “making students as important as standards.”

On Friday additional sessions will include an Update from the Mississippi Department of Education with Ms. Sandy Elliott and Ms. Teresa Laney and a session on Dysgraphia with Ms. Kristen Owens, Occupational Therapist with Beyond Therapy.

For this two-day conference, all registration and payment will be made through Mississippi College.  Cost of the conference is $125 for Thursday, September 28 only; $125 for Friday, September 29 only; and $225 for both conference days.  Registration includes meal tickets for lunch in the MC cafeteria directly below the meeting rooms.

ALTA CEUs are available to ALTA members free of charge.

1.0 CEUs (for both day’s attendance or 0.5 CEU for each individual day) are also available from the Mississippi College, Office of Continuing Education, for a separate payment of $10 for CEUs (exact cash, checks, or money orders made payable to Mississippi College).  The cost is the same for both days or either individual day.  Purchase orders and other forms of payment will not be accepted for CEUs.
